Kos Ancient SightsSouthwest of Kos City, not far from Kephalos, two ancient temples and a theatre have survived the ages. In Kardamena on the south coast we find the Temple of Apollo and another ancient theatre. Asfendiou is home to a temple devoted to the ancient goddess of grain and fertility, Demeter. What probably qualifies as the island's most famous archaeological attraction, the Asklepion, is located some 4km south of Kos City. The Asklepion was perhaps one of the earliest, definitely the most famous of medical schools in Antiquity. What's more, it also houses what may have been the world's first hospital. The Asklepion was excavated between 1902 and 1904 by the German archaeologist Rudolf Herzog. |
