Kos AsklepionThe area of the Asklepion is vast and divided into three terraces, each of which served distinct ritual and/or healing purposes. Visitors approach the site via an asphalted road which ends in an alley, lined with fir trees. The first level of the Asklepion housed hospital-, bathing-, and toiletry rooms, as well as lecture halls; it was surrounded by pillars (propylae). On the second level stood the temples of Apollo and Asclepius, along with the priest's quarters and clubrooms. Since temples often also functioned as the „banks of Antiquity“, the second level also held the treasury. Finally, on the third level are the ruins of teaching- and hospital rooms and the dorian-style major Temple of Asclepius. The Asklepion is open to visitors mo-fr from 10:00 to 18:00. |
