Plane Tree of Hippocrates

Claimed by some to be Europe's oldest tree, the Plane Tree of Hippocrates is accessible via a bridge from the fortress. Legend has it, that Hippocrates, father of medicine, used to give lectures beneath this tree.

The tree is thought to be some 2400 years old and has a circumference of over 9 metres.

That said, it is showing signs of frailty and these days has to be sustained by metal poles.
